Functional Medicine is a personalized, patient-centered, science-based approach that encourages patients and practitioners to collaborate in addressing the root causes of disease and promoting overall wellness. Rather than just treating symptoms, practitioners focus on identifying the complexity of the disease. This treatment approach targets the specific manifestations of disease in each individual.
Functional Medicine Practitioners begin by asking patients to complete a comprehensive health history assessment before their first visit. They review the health history, spend time getting to know the patient, identify their health goals, and may order comprehensive lab tests to determine deficiencies, hormonal imbalances, and gut microbiome issues that may be the underlying cause of symptoms. Practitioners then create a personalized healthy living plan for the patient, which may include nutritional supplements, dietary adjustments, and lifestyle changes.
